University of Lagos 55th Convocation ceremonies (January 8-19, 2025)
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) held its 55th Convocation Ceremonies from January 8 to January 19, 2025, celebrating the academic achievements of its 2023/2024 graduating class.
Pre-Convocation Activities:
January 8, 2025:
Pre-Convocation Press Conference: Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, addressed the media, outlining the upcoming events and highlighting the university's milestones.
Convocation Rehearsal I: Graduating students participated in the first rehearsal at the J.F. Ade. Ajayi Auditorium.
January 9, 2025:
Rehearsal for Hooding Ceremonies: Faculties and the Distance Learning Institute conducted rehearsals to ensure a seamless hooding process.
January 10, 2025:
Special Jumat Service: A service was held at the University of Lagos Central Mosque to commence the convocation activities.
Convocation Rehearsal II: A subsequent rehearsal took place at the J.F. Ade. Ajayi Auditorium.
Convocation Lecture and Exhibition:
January 13, 2025:
Opening of Exhibition: An exhibition showcasing academic and research achievements was inaugurated at the Senate Car Park opposite the J.F. Ade. Ajayi Auditorium.
Convocation Lecture: Dr. Tayo Aduloju, CEO of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), delivered a lecture titled "Universities as Hubs for Development and Wealth Creation." The session was chaired by His Excellency, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, CON, former Federal Minister of Works and Housing.
Award of Degrees and Diplomas:
January 14, 2025:
Morning Session (9:00 a.m.): First Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates, and Prizes were awarded to graduates from the Faculties of Education and Social Sciences.
Afternoon Session (1:00 p.m.): Graduates from the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Sciences, and Science received their awards.
Hooding Ceremonies (3:00 p.m.): Bachelor Degree graduates from the Faculties/Institute of Engineering, Law, Management Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Pharmacy, and the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) participated in hooding ceremonies at venues determined by their respective Deans/Director.
January 15, 2025:
Morning Session (9:00 a.m.): Degrees and Diplomas were conferred upon graduates from the Faculties of Engineering, Law, and Management Sciences.
Afternoon Session (1:00 p.m.): Graduates from the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Pharmacy, and DLI received their awards.
Hooding Ceremonies (3:00 p.m.): Higher Degrees were conferred upon graduates from the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) and the University of Lagos Business School (ULBS).
Alumni Reception (6:00 p.m.): An alumni reception was held at the Tolulope Odugbemi Hall.
January 16, 2025:
Congregation for Postgraduate Awards (10:00 a.m.): Postgraduate Diplomas, Master's Degrees, Ph.D. Degrees, and the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award were conferred by the SPGS. Additionally, Master's Degrees from ULBS and Honorary Doctorate Degrees were awarded.
Luncheon with the Doyen (2:00 p.m.): A luncheon was held at the Senate Lounge, 1st Floor, Senate House.
Post-Convocation Activities:
January 17, 2025:
Long Service Award (10:00 a.m.): Staff members were honored for their dedicated service at the Tolu Odugbemi Hall.
Convocation Play (4:00 p.m.): A theatrical performance of "Langbodo" by Wale Ogunyemi was staged at the J.F. Ade. Ajayi Auditorium.
January 19, 2025:
Thanksgiving Service (10:00 a.m.): A service was held at the Chapel of Christ Our Light to conclude the convocation ceremonies.
Notable Achievements:
During the ceremonies, it was highlighted that two exceptional students from the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Science—Damilare Haroun Adebakin and Samuel Akinade Badekale—graduated with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0, sharing the honor of overall best graduating students.
